How much cake do you actually need?
A simple guide to sizes, servings and the difference between a party slice and a dessert slice.

Most people over-order. A party slice is a finger-width slice about an inch wide, and it’s what most of our serving numbers are based on. A dessert slice, served on a plate with a fork, is about twice that.
As a rule of thumb, a 6-inch cake serves 12 party slices, an 8-inch serves 20 and a 10-inch serves 30. If it’s the only pudding, size up once.
Tiered cakes look generous but serve the same as their combined layers: a 6-inch on an 8-inch serves around 40.
